On April 3, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan. Several buildings collapsed in the city of Hualien, near the epicenter, killing one person and injuring several others.

Local officials in Hanzawa stressed the need to immediately set up toilets, kitchens and beds within 48 hours of the disaster. The earthquake has highlighted the problem of not being able to stockpile supplies as supply lines have stopped due to road closures.

Of the 34,000 people evacuated after the earthquake, only 21,000 have been traced. The officer in charge said that the only solution is to process the handwritten documents submitted by each displaced person, which is a challenge in itself.
